Major General Gordon Granger, as commander of the Department of Texas, issued General Order No. 3. He led Union troops into Galveston, Texas on that day, to inform the people there of the freedom issued to those who’d been enslaved.
The abolition of slavery became law with the passage of the
13th Amendment to the Constitution of the United States.
